This may sound admirable but that kind of imbalance can have negative impact on your productivity, creativity and your health.

I am a firm believer that some of the most creative ideas are derived from real life experiences. People have a natural hunger for novelty and inspiration. The root of this inspiration usually stems from real life events and observations. When at work, there is always something driving your efforts. You may be thinking about that next pay check or a vacation you are working towards. While ideas can not be executed without work, play can contribute to higher quality ideas and more efficient execution. In light of this, here are some tips on nurturing the balance between work and play.

  • Identify the top 5 non-work activities that relieve stress and make you happy. Set aside 2-4 hours each week to participate in these activities.
  • Take a break once a day to step back from your work, reflect on progress and put things into perspective.
  • Create a fun work environment by making your work space less constricting. For example, add a putting green, post inspirational art/quotes and even consider painting your office a different color.
  • Reward yourself based on goals. For example, if you finish a big project, take a 2 day ski trip.
  • Eat right, exercise and live healthy. Some of the most successful people are also very healthy. Keeping you body healthy makes you feel better and less stressful.

Time Management: 3 Quick and Easy Steps to Manage Your Time Better

Time ManagementTime management is one of the least-mastered and most-desired skills in out fast-paced modern world.  Time management truly is critical to becoming successful, doing everything you want to, and achieving ultimate success.

Here are 3 quick and easy steps to help you manage your time better:

1)         Eliminate time wasters in your life.  Time wasters are things that interrupt you and you spend time doing, but you wouldn’t have chosen to do them given the choice.  Eliminating these time wasters is critical for time management:

•           Email—If you are spending more than 30 minutes per day on email (unless that is your business) you are spending too much!

•           Telephone—If you answer the phone live more than 5 times per day during your productive time (work, work at home, etc.) you are sacrificing time management and efficiency.  When you answer the phone, you interrupt your current productive flow and this kills your productivity.

•           Television—This must be limited for you to achieve ultimate control over your time.  My recommendation is 30 minutes per day, especially if you are not getting all the things done you need or want to.

2)         Make a list of what is genuinely important in your life and just start doing the    things on your list.  One of the keys to time management is prioritization—you absolutely must know what you want to accomplish and then go do it.  Today’s world has too many distractions and when you allow those distractions to become priority, you sacrifice time management.  Follow these steps:

•           Make of list of what you want to accomplish

•           Set time frames for accomplishing each item

•           Organize each item in order of importance

•           Create a game plan for achieving each of your goals in its respective time frame

3)         Begin to focus on time management throughout the course of the day.  Your consistent focus must be on managing your time.  Once you have determined your goals and your priorities, start focusing on simply getting those things done.  If something isn’t on your goals list for this week—don’t do it until all your goals are done.  When you prioritize every interruption that occurs and put your goals last, you will not accomplish your goals.  Instead, you will be a slave (as you probably are now) to interruptions and probably feel like you never accomplish enough.

Goal setting success is a key strategy for mastering your time, money and your life. If you’re not as success as you want simply look at your goals and plans to achieve them.   1. Dare to Be Great.  Great things happen to people who dare to push the boundaries of their past experience.  Ask yourself, “What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?”  The answer may both surprise and motivate you.  Make sure your goals are exciting enough to compel you towards them.
  2. Have a Clear Outcome.  For a dream to become a goal, it must be specific and measurable.  While it’s fun to daydream about being wealthy, it takes courage and hard choices to decide exactly how much money you want to earn and what you’ll actually do to earn it.

Reinforcement.  Review your goals every day in the morning and before you go to bed.  If a goal is worth having, it’s worth 2-3 minutes each day to reinforce it.  In the morning, review your goals and ask yourself, “What can I do today to help me achieve my goals?”  Before you go to bed ask, “What did I do today to help me achieve my goals?”  Do this every day.
  7. Take Action Every day.  Most goals can’t be achieved in one day.  You can’t make a million dollars in a day, you can’t lose 20 pounds overnight, and you can’t increase sales 30% with a single call.  Break your goals down into manageable chunks so that you can take some action every day.  If you look at a task, ask “What can I do today that will move the goal forward?”  Keep asking this question until you find a manageable chunk for the day.  These can be simple things like earn an extra $100, workout for 20 minutes or do research on a key client.
  8. Manage Your Self-Talk.  Most challenging goals encounter speed bumps along the way.  When this happens, self-doubt often rears its ugly head in the form of negative self-talk.  When you start hearing yourself say, “I can’t do this”, “you blew it”, etc., remember you control the self-talk. If you don’t like the conversation, change it.  Tell yourself what you want and need to hear to succeed.
  9. Self Correct as NeededSince change is constant, make sure that you regularly review your goals and evaluate your commitment to them.  If you values or your choices have changed, change your goals to fit the circumstances.  If the goals still fit, go for them full out.  Remember, there is no failure, only feedback.
  10. Celebrate progress.  Don’t wait until the goal is fully achieved to celebrate.  Every step towards your goal should be documented and celebrated.  When you get down or discouraged, your record of past successes will quickly get you back on track.  Celebrate each and every milestone on your journey to success.

Failing to delegate severely limits the time you have for focusing on the areas that are most important at work and in your life. Many people are doomed to “major in the minors” because they can’t or won’t delegate. Think of delegation as simply insuring that the right things get done by the right people. If you want to improve your ability to delegate, use the guidelines below:

Analyze your activities and classify them into three areas:

1. activities only you have the ability and authority to do

2. activities others should do, but you do occasionally

3. activities you do, but others should do or that should be automated

For the first group of activities, “reality test” your perceptions to ensure only you can do the activities. Check with your boss on items of authority and responsibility. Re-evaluate your subordinates or other departments to determine if they could, or should, be doing some of these activities.

For the second group of activities, reconfirm with others their responsibility for handling the activities. Make sure it is clear that they are to perform the task without your involvement.

The final group of activities offers you the greatest opportunity for increasing your time utilization. First, ask yourself why you do these activities. Is it because:

  • you get satisfaction from doing them?
  • you can do it better and/or faster than others?
  • others don’t want to do them?
  • others don’t know how to do them?
  • you don’t take time to let other know it’s their responsibility?
  • you haven’t taken the time to automate the process?

Now automate all activities possible using technology. This may include your calendar, phone apps and software programs or features. This will take some upfront investment of time but will have a big payoff going forward.

Next you have to identify the specific activities that you can delegate and then develop a plan for doing so. Your plan should include:

  • How you will communicate the responsibilities to the other person(s).
  • How you will insure the other person(s) is both willing and able to perform the activities.
  • How and when you will monitor results to maintain accountability.

Only you can determine the best use of your time. To be successful you must stay focused on the activities that produce the greatest results. Delegating effectively makes sure that you have the time needed to do so.
